Unknown Facts About Dragon Ball Z Every Fan Should Know
Want to impress fellow anime fans with some lesser-known Dragon Ball facts? Here are five interesting details about the franchise.
1. Goku’s Saiyan Name Is Kakarot
Goku was born as Kakarot, a Saiyan sent to Earth as a baby. His adopted Earth name became synonymous with courage, kindness, and extraordinary fighting ability. Vegeta frequently calls him Kakarot, emphasizing their shared Saiyan heritage and competitive relationship.
2. Vegeta Was Initially an Antagonist
Vegeta first appeared as a dangerous enemy during the Saiyan Saga. Over time, his character developed into one of the franchise’s most complex heroes. His transformation from ruthless conqueror to protector of his family and Earth is a major part of his appeal.
3. Akira Toriyama Drew Inspiration from Classic Chinese Literature
The original Dragon Ball manga was influenced in part by the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West. Goku’s early adventures reflect elements associated with the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, including a magical staff and a cloud that allows him to travel through the sky.
4. The Scouter Became an Iconic Piece of Anime Technology
During the early Saiyan and Frieza storylines, scouters helped characters estimate opponents’ power levels. The memorable device became closely associated with the series and inspired countless jokes and references among anime fans.
5. Super Saiyan Hair Color Has a Practical Artistic Explanation
The Super Saiyan transformation’s distinctive golden hair helped create a dramatic visual contrast. In the manga, the lighter hair also reduced the amount of black ink Toriyama needed to fill in the character’s hair, making the transformation visually striking and more practical to draw.
These behind-the-scenes details reveal how character design, storytelling, and artistic decisions helped make Dragon Ball one of the most influential anime and manga franchises worldwide.
